Summerland
Welcome to Summerland! This podcast has now moved to Substack. its easier to use and better designed for sharing free content, also it looks slightly nicer and my recordings will find their way into your emails so you don’t need to be mucking about with apps: https://sumerisicumen.substack.com/ A podcast exploring stories and folktales local to Bristol, Bath and North Somerset. In each episode I will tell a story and include a few local walks where the story took place, or that complement it in some way. I will always include an accessible walk. I hope it helps us to reconnect with the landscape and the stories it has to tell. Expect talking trees, sun goddesses, giants and fairies. Expect dodgy recordings and pointers to local events and musicians. I don’t know what this year holds but I hope to share a good few stories before I run out of steam or get sucked into some other venture. P.S. The stories I tell don’t belong to me or anyone else: so please feel free to retell them.

Summer is acoming in...
Loudly sing cuckoo...
Groweth seed and bloweth mead...
And spring the wood anew...
Sing cuckoo...
Ewe she bleateth after lamb...
Cow loweth after calf...
Bullock stirreth, stag cavorteth...
Merry sing cuckoo!...
Cuckoo, cuckoo...
Well sing you cuckoo...
Merrily sing cuckoo

Please be aware: this story has references to alcohol and drinking.
Had some trouble with the tech on this one: recording is a bit glitchy and several animals were making themselves known. Still, I had a great time telling it!

Thinking about Wangari Maathai today. With the National Council of Women in Kenya she began the Greenbelt Movement, which began in Kenya then spread across Africa. She shows us what it means to take responsibility for our role as a keystone species, and to cause life and diversity to bloom between our fingers.
Special thanks to Su Hart and her Glastonbury choir who taught me this song.
